What is a virgin mojito?

The mojito comes from Havana, Cuba, where it was traditionally made with white rum, lime, sugar, mint and soda water. A virgin mojito (also called a mint mojito mocktail or "nojito") simply leaves the rum out. Lime and mint carry the flavour, so you hardly miss it.

It is one of the most popular mocktails in India because the ingredients are easy to find. Pudina and nimbu are in most kitchens already.

Virgin mojito recipe

Virgin Mojito

Prep: 5 minMakes: 1 glass (about 250 ml)Alcohol-free

Ingredients

  • 8 to 10 fresh mint leaves, plus a sprig to garnish
  • ½ lime, cut into 4 wedges
  • 2 tsp sugar or 20 ml sugar syrup
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • 150 ml chilled soda water

Method

  1. Put the mint leaves, lime wedges and sugar into a sturdy glass.
  2. Press down gently with a muddler or the back of a spoon 4 to 5 times to release the lime juice and mint oils. Do not shred the mint.
  3. Fill the glass with crushed ice.
  4. Top up with chilled soda water and stir from the bottom to lift the mint.
  5. Garnish with a mint sprig and a lime wedge and serve.

The mint mistake most people make

Muddling means pressing, not pounding. When you crush mint leaves hard, you break the veins and release chlorophyll, which tastes grassy and bitter. Press gently just until you can smell the mint. The lime wedges need a bit more pressure to release their juice, which is why they go in with the mint.

Quick fix: no muddler? Clap the mint leaves between your palms once before dropping them in. It releases the aroma without bruising them.

Two other small things help a lot: use crushed ice (it chills the drink faster and looks the part), and use soda water instead of a sweet soft drink so the mint and lime come through.

Mojito variations to try

Masala mojito

Add ¼ tsp chaat masala and a pinch of kala namak with the sugar. This is the version you see on street-side menus across India, and it is very good.

Watermelon mojito

Muddle 4 to 5 cubes of watermelon along with the mint and lime. Watermelon is sweet, so cut the sugar in half.

Strawberry mojito

Add 3 sliced strawberries before muddling for a pink, slightly jammy version.

Ginger mojito

Add a few thin slices of fresh ginger for warmth. This works well on cooler evenings.

Virgin mojito FAQs

What is the difference between a mojito and a virgin mojito?

A mojito contains white rum. A virgin mojito has the same lime, mint, sugar and soda but no alcohol.

Can I use Sprite instead of soda water?

Yes, but leave out the sugar because Sprite is already sweet. The drink will be sweeter and the mint less noticeable.

Can I make virgin mojito in advance?

Muddle the mint, lime and sugar up to an hour ahead and keep it in the fridge. Add the ice and soda only when serving so it stays fizzy.

Lemon or lime for mojito?

Lime (or the small Indian nimbu, which is a type of lime) gives the classic flavour. Larger yellow lemons work but taste a little softer.
