Low-Calorie Mocktails: How to Enjoy Party Drinks Without the Sugar Rush
Skipping the alcohol doesn't automatically mean a light drink. Plenty of café mocktails have more sugar than a can of cola. Here's how to keep the fun and lose most of the calories.

Why many mocktails are surprisingly sugary
Most mocktails get their flavour from three things: syrups, fruit juices and sweet soft drinks. All three are mostly sugar. A regular cola has roughly 40 to 45 calories per 100 ml, so a 300 ml glass is already well over 100 calories, before any syrup is added. A big café mocktail made with syrup, juice and a soft drink can easily cost you a couple of hundred calories.
That's fine as an occasional treat. But if you are hosting often, watching your sugar, or simply want to have a second or third drink without thinking about it, a few small swaps make a big difference.
7 easy ways to make lighter mocktails
1. Top up with soda water, not soft drinks
Soda water has zero calories and gives you all the fizz. This one swap removes most of the sugar from drinks like the Blue Lagoon and the virgin mojito.
2. Lean on fresh citrus
Lime, lemon and orange peel add a lot of flavour for very few calories. A sharper drink also tastes more "grown-up", so you need less sweetness.
3. Use herbs and spices
Mint, basil, ginger, cucumber, jeera, chaat masala and kala namak all add flavour without adding sugar. Indian masala coolers are naturally lighter than most syrupy mocktails.
4. Halve the syrup
Most recipes are sweeter than they need to be. Start with half the syrup, taste, and add more only if you need it.
5. Dilute juices
Mix fruit juice half and half with soda water. You keep the colour and flavour and halve the calories.
6. Use smaller glasses and more ice
A smaller glass packed with ice looks generous and still feels like a proper drink.
7. Choose a low-calorie instant mix
Each Partay sachet makes a 200 ml mocktail with 7 calories. Blue Lagoon, Cosmopolitan and Mojito all come in at the same number, so you can have the party drink without counting.
