Virgin Cosmopolitan Mocktail: A Cranberry Cosmo Without the Alcohol
Pink, tangy and a little bit glamorous. The cosmopolitan is the drink that makes a regular evening feel like an occasion, and the mocktail version is easy to make at home.

What is a virgin cosmopolitan?
The cosmopolitan, or "cosmo", is a cocktail of vodka, orange liqueur, cranberry juice and lime that became hugely popular in the 1990s. It is the pink drink in a stemmed glass you have probably seen in films and TV shows.
A virgin cosmopolitan keeps the cranberry and lime and replaces the alcohol with a little orange juice for body and sweetness. The result is tart, fruity and refreshing, and it looks just as good in the glass.
Virgin cosmopolitan recipe
Virgin Cosmopolitan Mocktail
Ingredients
- 90 ml cranberry juice
- 30 ml orange juice
- 15 ml fresh lime juice
- 10 ml sugar syrup (optional, to taste)
- A splash of soda water (optional)
- Ice for shaking
- Orange peel twist, to garnish
Method
- Chill a martini or coupe glass by filling it with ice water while you mix.
- Add the cranberry, orange and lime juice and the sugar syrup to a shaker or a jar with a tight lid, along with a handful of ice.
- Shake hard for 10 to 15 seconds until the outside feels cold.
- Empty the chilled glass and strain the drink into it.
- Top with a splash of soda if you like it lighter, then twist a strip of orange peel over the glass and drop it in.
No shaker? A clean jar with a tight lid works perfectly. Shaking with ice chills the drink fast and adds a little froth on top.
How to make it look like a bar drink
- Chill the glass first. A cold glass keeps the drink crisp, and the light frost on the outside looks great in photos.
- Strain it. Pour through a tea strainer to keep ice chips out for a smooth finish.
- Express the orange peel. Twist a strip of peel over the glass so the oils spray on the surface. It adds aroma you notice before the first sip.
- Use 100% cranberry juice if you can. Cranberry "drinks" are sweeter, so reduce or skip the sugar syrup if that is what you have.
Cosmo variations
Sparkling cosmo
Serve it in a tall glass over ice and top with 100 ml of soda for a longer, lighter drink.
Pomegranate cosmo
Swap half the cranberry juice for fresh anaar juice. It's a little sweeter and a deeper red, and perfect for festive evenings.
Cosmo cooler
Add a few slices of cucumber and a sprig of mint to the shaker for a fresher, summery version.
The 10-second way: Partay Cosmopolitan
Cranberry juice isn't always in the fridge. Partay Cosmopolitan gives you that tangy cranberry-citrus mocktail from a 3 g sachet. Add about 200 ml of chilled water or soda, stir and pour over ice. It has 7 calories per serving and costs ₹20. You can still finish it with an orange twist.
